Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, July 9, 2024 - The country’s mental health crisis helpline, or Heal Line 15555, has received 48,903 calls since its establishment in 2022, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"This is a very high number, and we must take this seriously as a society," he told a press conference after chairing a meeting of the National Social Council today.

According to statistics, Zahid said the majority of those who commit suicide are Chinese, followed by Indians and Malays.

"Malays rarely commit suicide unless the pressure is too much, and this is primarily due to problems with indebtedness," he said.

Zahid said the meeting had also agreed on more collaborative efforts to overcome the issue of suicide in the country.

"Proactive action should be taken, not only by the health ministry and the police, but also by other agencies that can provide counselling to individuals," he said.

Zahid added that the matter of TikTok influencer A Rajeswary committing suicide would be presented to the Cabinet on Friday.

The body of the 29-year-old woman was found in her home at about 11am last Friday. She had allegedly committed suicide due to cyberbullying.

According to statistics from the National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health, of the 48,903 people who called the Heal Line, 170 had suicidal thoughts and 129 had attempted suicide.

Meanwhile, according to the police, 3,670 men and 780 women committed suicide between 2019 and 2023. This figure peaked at 1,142 in 2021.

In 2021, agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu said the number of Malay Muslims committing suicide potentially surpassed that of other races, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Zahid said other matters discussed by the council included the government’s aim to implement the reproductive and social health education programme by 2027.

He added that the national suicide and fatal injury registry is expected to be fully operational by early 2025.
